4th December 2024

Whether you’re coming to stay in Surrey for work, or a relaxing holiday you’re going to be spoilt for choice for things to see and do.

Situated under twenty miles from London, it’s an ideal destination to get into the capital if you’re here for business, but as a county in its own right, the lush green landscapes and historic towns make it a perfect place for a fantastic getaway.

Staylets has a brilliant range of conveniently situated accommodations to suit many different budgets and tastes, so why not check out what we have to offer?

Staying a While in Surrey?

If you’re here regularly, for business or you have a weekend retreat, then there’s so much to see and do that the county really can become your home from home.

Relaxed getaways and weekly stays should be accompanied by lots of locally sourced delicious food, so make Guildford Farmers’ Market a regular feature. It’s held on the first Tuesday of every month on Guildford High Street. As a National Farmers’ Retail and Markets Association (FARMA) accredited market, it welcomes over fifty local food producers so you’ll be spoilt for delicious choices.

Why not select some fine wine to pair with your produce? You’ll find a beautiful selection when you take a day trip to England’s largest single-estate winery. Denbies Wine Estate offers quality, award-winning wine from over 265 acres of vines. A visit there can include a tour and tasting, as well as enjoying a relaxed meal in their restaurant and a stroll around their art gallery.

What’s on at the Weekend?

Coming for a weekend or a short let? Then you’ll still find plenty to interest you, whatever your interests and hobbies!

Visit Sunbury Antiques Market. This delightful location will whet the appetite of history buffs and those looking for retro treasures to invest in, or kit out their homes. Whether you want crockery, jewellery, or second-hand knick-knacks and furniture, there’s sure to be something here to delight.

For something completely different, check out the Woking Lightbox Gallery and Museum, which features two permanent exhibitions that are available to browse for free making for a fascinating day out. Whilst you’re there, pay a visit to the Woking’s Story exhibition and the Art Fund Prize Gallery always displays modern artwork for visitors to appreciate. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the history of the town, featuring a must-see retrospective of Woking Palace.

Keep the Kids Happy…

We haven’t forgotten the kids. After all, why should Mum and Dad have all the fun? Take a trip to one of the Kid’s Table venues. This is a pop-up service that runs exciting games and arts activities at family-friendly pubs and restaurants throughout the county. Fun and varied ranges of activities for kids are on offer, so parents and carers can relax with a meal. It’s for 3-10-year-olds and you’ll find a list of venues on their website.

For kids who have a passion for history, The Chertsey Museum holds a permanent exhibition which is free to enter and explores the fascinating history of Runnymede borough. There are Bronze Age objects on display, one of the most exciting is a Viking sword from the 10th century found near Thorpe Park in the 1980s!

The family as a whole will adore The British Wildlife Centre in East Surrey’s lush countryside. There are plenty of nature activities on offer including badger watches in an underground sett, walking with red squirrels, and a free flying owl display. There are also keeper talks held every half an hour allow you to see the animals and wildlife up close.

Eating, Drinking, and Nightlife

We’ve already highlighted some of the great places to pick up locally sourced food and drink, but if you want to eat out and enjoy some nightlife whilst you’re in the county then here are one or two picks to tickle your tastebuds.

Pop into Café Rouge on Chapel Street, Guildford, for a true taste of France. Serving breakfast, brunches, and dinners – this delightful French restaurant serves classic dishes with a modern twist. From steak frites or boeuf bourguignon to a selection of croques and baguettes ideal for a quick meal – there are also vegetarian-friendly options too.

Great Fosters, offers a real treat for those seeking lush cocktails. Their Cocktail Bar and Terraces are the ideal setting for a relaxing drink and evening out, whilst viewing the verdant landscape. Their terraces are open all day, and you can also find a fantastic selection of afternoon tea, coffee, drinks, and deliciously tempting apéritifs, too.
